71 builds on HardwareLab list a Raspberry Pi. Where ESP32 builds mostly send their AI work elsewhere, the Pi is where local AI becomes practical. It runs Linux, so builders install the same tools they would use on a desktop: Ollama, llama.cpp, whisper.cpp, Piper and YOLO all show up in these parts lists and AI stacks.
Voice assistants are the biggest group (21 builds), and many run with no cloud at all. pi-assistant does offline tool calling on a Pi 5 with Parakeet speech recognition, small Gemma and Arch-Function models and Piper. whisplay-offline-pi5 is a battery-powered Pi 5 assistant running Qwen3 1.7B through Ollama, and crankgpt is a hand-cranked assistant built on llama.cpp. Others keep the Pi as the hub and call a cloud model, like gpt-home.
Cameras are the second strength: 19 builds list a camera, and 6 add a Hailo accelerator (the AI Kit or AI HAT+) for faster detection, as in frigate-nvr-guide and birdcam-hailo-bioclip. E-ink frames are the third (10 builds): fugleramme hears birds with BirdNET and paints them, and paperpiai generates a new painting on a Pi Zero fully offline. Garden, pet and wildlife builds add 5 more.
Robots round it out (7 builds). rpi5-ai-robot is a Pi 5 rover that takes voice commands and runs local language and vision models, and pidog-embodiment wires a PiDog robot dog to a language model with local vision through llama.cpp.
How we picked: buildable projects only, most GitHub stars first, one per category.
Buy a Raspberry Pi 5 if you plan to run models locally: 27 of the 71 builds name it, including all three offline voice assistants above. The Pi Zero 2 W (8 builds) shows up in small e-ink frames, gadgets and garden stations, such as paperpiai and openseedling. Add a Hailo AI Kit or AI HAT+ only if you are building a camera project that needs fast object detection.
